Del Rey Spectra 50 Page Fridays: Alan Campbell

Every Friday, we here @ Del Rey Spectra will place a 50 page excerpt of a selected title on Suvudu. Whether it be science fiction, epic fantasy, alternate history, horror, urban fantasy, paranormal, the possibilities are endless. This week we’re going back into the Spectra catalogue and pulling out Scar Night, a very different and thought provoking fantasy by Alan Campbell. Allow me to give DRS author David Pomerico the floor to discuss great, great novel: “When I first started at Spectra, my boss at the time, Juliet Ulman, handed me Scar Night by Alan Campbell and simply said “read it.”  I was skeptical, as it didn’t seem like the kind of fantasy I was used to.  But, as I got deeper into the novel, I realized that’s exactly why she had given it to me in the first place—because it’s not like any fantasy I’ve ever read. Alan Campbell does what all great fantasy writers do: he creates an imaginative, incredible world and populates it with some astounding characters.  In the case of Scar Night, Alan gives us Deepgate, a city hanging by chains over the pit of Hell. What could be cooler than that? Scar Night brings readers into the unique vision of a brilliant writer, a story that is as much about the world as it is about the characters.  And whether you’re attached to Dill and the assassin Rachel or are more inclined to cheer for the insanely violent angel Carnival (my personal favorite), the fact is this is a novel that will challenge your notions as to what fantasy can be…in a very, very good way.  And, hopefully, this little taste will lead you into the rest of the trilogy (which consists of Iron Angel and God of Clocks). Put another way: Read it.” As always, feel free to give us feedback in the comments. Or let us know on Twitter via a direct message to our esteemed Twitter maven, our “five-tools” editor David Pomerico: www.twitter.com/delreyspectra . Or write on the wall of our Facebook page: Like us at www.facebook.com/delreyspectra . Again, please enjoy this extensive excerpt of Scar Night, available in eBook and paperback. The series continues in Iron Angel and God of Clocks, both available in eBook and paperback also. SCAR NIGHT by Alan Campbell, Excerpt
